Sarawak is rainforest, caves and river towns, with Kuching as the easy base for Sarawak laksa and a boat out to Bako National Park. Further afield, Mulu has some of the biggest caves on earth, and Sibu is the place for Foochow food like kampua mee. Kuching is under two hours' flight from KL, and most people fly into Mulu from Miri or Kuching.
