Sarawak's second city grew up around Malaysia's first oil well, drilled on Canada Hill in 1910. It's a relaxed coastal city with reefs offshore, national parks within an hour and flights into Mulu, and Brunei is just up the road.

Good to know
- Crossing into Brunei needs your passport. If you drive, sort out Brunei car insurance first.
- Blue tears are unpredictable. Your best chance is a dark, moonless night.
- Flights to Mulu are on small planes and fill up in the holidays, so book early.
