White villages on volcanic cliffs, blue domes and terraces above a huge sea-filled caldera.

May–June and September–October are warm, with thinner crowds and the sea warmest in September. July–August is hot and packed; in winter it's windy, and many hotels and restaurants close.

Getting there
Fly with one stop to Athens, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 14–16 hours all in. From there it's a 45-minute flight to Santorini, or about 5–8 hours by ferry from Piraeus. Greece is 5 hours behind KL in summer and 6 in winter.

Santorini is the rim of a sunken volcano, with white villages strung along cliffs high above a sea-filled crater. Beyond the blue domes and sunset crowds are black-sand beaches, quiet inland villages and a Bronze Age town buried in ash.

Things to do

  1. Fira and FirostefaniThe main town, strung along the caldera edge, with a path north to quieter Firostefani.Map ↗
  2. OiaThe village at the island's northern tip, all white houses, blue domes and windmills, packed at sunset.Map ↗
  3. PyrgosAn inland hill village of stepped lanes winding up to a ruined Venetian castle.Map ↗
  4. AkrotiriA Bronze Age town buried by the volcano about 3,600 years ago, its streets and houses now under a protective roof.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Oia's lanes fill hours before sunset; Imerovigli and Pyrgos have the same view with far fewer people.
  • Buses fan out from Fira, so getting between other villages usually means changing there.
  • Halal food is very limited. Fava, tomato fritters and grilled fish are easy, but gyros and souvlaki are usually pork.
