mykonos

Whitewashed lanes, seaside windmills and sandy beaches with a lively evening scene.

Best time
May–June and September are warm, with beaches and boats running and smaller crowds. July–August is packed and the meltemi wind blows hard; from November to March most hotels and restaurants close.
How long
3 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop to Athens, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 14–16 hours all in. From there it's a 40-minute flight to Mykonos, or about 2.5–5 hours by ferry from Piraeus or Rafina. Greece is 5 hours behind KL in summer and 6 in winter.

Mykonos is known for beach clubs and late nights, but its whitewashed town, harbour windmills and the ancient island of Delos next door are worth seeing by day. Keep the mornings for town and the afternoons for a sheltered south-coast beach.

Things to do

  2. Little Venice and the windmillsOld captains' houses with balconies over the water, and a row of windmills on the ridge behind.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Most ferries dock at the New Port, a few kilometres north of town; buses and a summer sea bus run in.
  • Strong winds can cancel ferries and the Delos boat, so leave a spare night in Athens before your flight home.
  • Halal food is very limited; grilled fish and Greek salads are easy, but gyros and souvlaki are usually pork.
