dhigurah
A long sandbar, village guesthouses and whale-shark boat trips in South Ari Atoll.
- Best time
- January–April is the driest and calmest time, with the clearest water. May–November brings more rain and wind, but boats still go out when the sea allows, and the whale sharks stay all year.
- How long
- 4–5 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct from KL to Malé (about 4.5 hours), then it's about 2 hours by public speedboat, or a 20-minute domestic flight to Maamigili and a short boat across. Guesthouses usually arrange it. The Maldives is 3 hours behind KL.

Dhigurah is a long, thin local island in South Ari Atoll, with a village at one end and a sandbar trailing off the other. South Ari's outer reef is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks are seen all year, and the boats leave from right here.

Things to do

- Whale sharksBoats patrol South Ari's outer reef for the world's biggest fish, and when one is spotted you slip in with mask and fins.Map ↗

Good to know
- Local-island rules apply: food is halal, there's no alcohol, and away from the tourist beach you cover shoulders and knees.
- Good whale-shark trips keep swimmers back and limit numbers in the water, and nobody can promise a sighting.
- The last public speedboat from Malé leaves in the afternoon, so a late flight can mean a night in Malé.
