For most people, Kedah means Langkawi: cable car views, beaches and duty-free chocolate. On the mainland, Alor Setar has the Zahir Mosque and nasi kandar, Gunung Jerai looks out over the rice fields, and Bujang Valley has thousand-year-old temple ruins. Langkawi is about an hour's flight from KL, or you can drive up to Kuala Kedah and take the ferry across.
