corfu

Venetian lanes, green hills and west-coast bays framed by olive trees.

Best time
May–June and September are warm and good for town and beaches, though the sea is still cool in May. July–August is hot and busy; November–February is wet, and many places close.
How long
4–5 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop to Athens, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 14–16 hours all in, then an hour's flight to Corfu. The airport is about 10 minutes from town. Greece is 5 hours behind KL in summer and 6 in winter.

Corfu is greener than the Aegean islands, with olive-covered hills and an old town shaped by Venetian and then British rule. Spend a couple of days in town, then head for the bays on the west coast.

Good to know

  • Blue city buses run around town and the suburbs; green KTEL buses go to the rest of the island from a different terminal.
  • Halal food is scarce; fish, vegetable dishes and pies are easy, but gyros and souvlaki are usually pork.
