meteora
Monasteries balanced on tall rock pillars above villages and walking paths.
- Best time
- April–June and September–October are mild and good for the stairs and trails. July–August is hot and busy; winter is quiet, but fog, rain and ice can make paths slippery.
- How long
- 2 days, 1 night
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Athens, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 14–16 hours all in. Kalambaka, the town below the rocks, is about 4 hours from Athens by car, or about 5 hours by bus with a change in Trikala. Greece is 5 hours behind KL in summer and 6 in winter.

Meteora's sandstone pillars rise straight out of the Thessaly plain, topped by monasteries that monks once reached by ladders and rope nets. Six are still active and open to visitors.

Things to do

- VarlaamA monastery with a richly frescoed chapel and the old tower where supplies were winched up in a net.Map ↗
- St Stephen'sA nunnery reached by a short bridge rather than long stairs, with views over Kalambaka.Map ↗
- Kastraki and the old pathsFootpaths from Kastraki village wind between the rocks, past hermit caves high in the cliffs.Map ↗
Good to know
- Each monastery has its own weekly closing day, so not all six are open on any one day.
- Shoulders must be covered, men need long trousers and women skirts below the knee; wraps are lent at the door.
- Halal food is hard to find in Kalambaka; bean dishes, pies and grilled vegetables are the easy choices.
