tokyo or osaka?
Both are classic first-trip cities in Japan, and the flight from KL is long either way. Tokyo is huge, with neighbourhoods that feel like different cities, while Osaka is smaller, louder and all about food, with Kyoto and Nara a short train ride away.

- Shibuya Crossing, Senso-ji and Shinjuku are all on the list
- you'd like a day trip to Kamakura or Nikko

The verdict
Tokyo has more to see and suits a longer first trip; Osaka is the better base if food and day trips matter most. Can't decide? With a week or more, do both and take the shinkansen between them, about two and a half hours. With five days or less, pick one, and Osaka plus Kyoto is the easier first trip.
