phuket or bali?
Both are big-name beach islands that get weighed up for a week off. Phuket is the simpler beach holiday, with calm Andaman bays and boat trips, while Bali is a longer flight with more culture, from rice terraces and temples in Ubud to surf and clifftop sunsets in the south. They're also good at opposite times of year.

The verdict
Phuket is the easier beach trip, with a shorter flight and calm seas in its dry season. Bali has more variety, from rice fields to surf, but it needs more days and some patience with the traffic. Can't decide? Let the dates choose: Phuket from November to April, Bali from April to October.
