penang or melaka?
George Town and Melaka share a UNESCO listing, and both are shophouse towns with serious food, so they end up in the same argument. The big difference is distance: Melaka is an easy two-hour drive for a weekend, while Penang takes longer to reach but has enough to fill three days.

Go penang if…
- you want a different hawker dinner every night
- you have three days and want more than a walk around town
- you'd like a hill, a big temple and a beach on the same trip
- you'd rather take the train than drive
Go melaka if…
- you only have a weekend and don't want a long drive
- Nyonya food and chicken rice balls are top of the list
- you want to wander the Jonker Walk night market at the weekend
- you like having everything within walking distance
The verdict
Penang wins on food and has more to do, so it's worth the longer trip if you have three days. Melaka is the easier weekend: you can see the main sights in a day and still have time for cendol by the river. Can't decide? Do Melaka on a short weekend and save Penang for a long one.
