lipe or langkawi?
Ko Lipe sits just across the sea border from Langkawi, and the ferry to Lipe leaves from Langkawi, so the two are often weighed up together. Lipe is a tiny island with clear water and reefs that you can walk around, while Langkawi is a bigger island with more to do and no immigration to clear.

Go lipe if…
- clear water and snorkelling are the whole point
- you like the idea of walking everywhere with no car
- you don't mind a ferry and an immigration stop
- you're travelling between November and April
Go langkawi if…
- you want a cable car, mangroves and duty-free shopping as well as the beach
- you'd rather fly once and skip the boat
- you're going between May and October, when Lipe's ferries cut back
- you're travelling with young kids or older parents and want it simple
The verdict
Lipe has the better water and beaches by a long way; Langkawi has more to do and is much easier to reach. Since Lipe's main ferry leaves from Langkawi, you don't really have to choose. Can't decide? Between November and April, spend a couple of nights in each; outside those months, stick to Langkawi.
