fukuoka or osaka?
Both are food-first Japanese cities about six hours' flight from KL, and both make a good first Japan trip. Fukuoka is smaller and calmer, with ramen stalls by the river and an airport 15 minutes from town, while Osaka is bigger and louder, with Kyoto, Nara and Universal Studios close by.

The verdict
Fukuoka is the simpler, calmer trip and suits a long weekend; Osaka has more to see and eat, with Kyoto and Nara close by. Can't decide? With a week, see both and take the shinkansen between them, about 2.5 hours. With three days or less, Fukuoka lah.
