Croatia's capital has a hilltop old town of churches and gas lamps above a 19th-century lower town of parks, cafés and museums. It's a relaxed first or last stop, and good in any season.

Good to know

  • Zagreb is the easiest place in Croatia for halal food: the restaurant at the Islamic Centre beside the Zagreb Mosque serves Balkan grills, there are Middle Eastern places in the centre, and several big hotels are halal-certified.
  • The railway station is at the south end of the Lower Town parks; the bus station is further east, a short tram ride away.
