hvar

Stone harbour towns, small swimming coves and lavender-growing villages inland.

Best time
May–June and September are warm and good for swimming, walking and boat trips, and the lavender flowers in June and early July. July–August is busiest; from November to March ferries are fewer and most tourist places close.
How long
3–4 days
Getting there
Fly to Split with one stop, usually via Istanbul, or change in Zagreb for a short domestic flight; allow about 17–20 hours all in. Catamarans from Split reach Hvar Town in about an hour; car ferries go to Stari Grad in about 2 hours. Croatia is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Hvar is a long, sunny island of stone harbour towns, pine-backed coves and lavender fields. Hvar Town has the yachts and the nightlife; Stari Grad, one of Europe's oldest towns, and the inland villages are quieter.

Good to know

  • Catamarans go to Hvar Town and car ferries to Stari Grad, on opposite sides of the island, so book the one that matches your base.
  • Halal food is very scarce on the island; grilled fish, octopus peka and vegetable dishes are the easy options.
