ulu kenas recreational forest
A cool, rocky river under tall trees in the Bubu forest, 15 minutes from Kuala Kangsar.
- Best time
- Any dry spell, with January–February and June–August usually the driest. Weekday mornings are quietest. After rain in the hills the river rises fast and turns brown, so give it a miss.
- How long
- Half a day
- Getting there
- About 3 hours' drive from KL: the North–South Expressway to Kuala Kangsar, then 15 km on the road towards Manong. Ipoh is about an hour away.

A Forestry Department eco-park in the Bubu forest reserve, 15 km from Kuala Kangsar, where a clear, rocky river runs under tall trees. Families come for a dip in the shallows and a picnic. Hikers come because it's the start of the trail up Gunung Bubu.

Things to do
- The riverCold, clear pools between the boulders. Stay in the shallows; the deeper channels pull.Map ↗
- The waterfall loopA forest trail of about 5 km to the Ulu Kenas falls and back, roughly two hours.Map ↗
- Gunung BubuAt 1,657 m, Bubu is the big mountain behind the park, and Ulu Kenas is its main trailhead. It's a long, hard climb that needs a Forestry permit, and most groups go with a licensed guide, so treat it as a separate trip.Map ↗
- A night in the forestThere are chalets, a dormitory and a campsite; book through the Kuala Kangsar district forest office.Map ↗
Good to know
- Bring a change of clothes and something to sit on. The picnic huts fill up early at weekends.
- Pair it with Victoria Bridge and Kuala Kangsar town for a full day.
