Turkistan is a pilgrimage city built around the mausoleum of the Sufi poet Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, raised on Timur's orders in the 14th century. It's a quieter, older counterpoint to Almaty and Astana, with the ruins of Silk Road cities out on the steppe.

Things to do

- Arystan Bab MausoleumThe tomb of Yasawi's teacher, about an hour south, where pilgrims traditionally stop first.Map ↗
- SauranThe mud-brick walls of an abandoned Silk Road city, about 40 minutes north-west.Map ↗
- OtyrarExcavated ruins of a trading city sacked by Genghis Khan, near Arystan Bab and best seen with a guide.Map ↗
Good to know
- The mausoleum is an active pilgrimage site, so cover shoulders and knees.
- Arystan Bab and Otyrar make one half-day trip; Sauran is in the other direction.
- Food is halal as standard in this conservative southern city.
