Aktau is a Soviet-built city on the Caspian, with a rocky waterfront and sunsets over the sea. Most people come for the desert behind it: Mangystau's white chalk cliffs, canyons and fields of stone balls, reached on guided 4WD trips.

Good to know

  • Desert trips need a driver and a proper 4WD; the last tracks are not for rental cars, and Bozzhyra is about 300 km from Aktau.
  • There's no shade and few shops once you leave town, so take plenty of water.
  • Many cafés display a halal sign, and Kazakh cooking leans on lamb, beef and horse; Russian-style places may serve pork.
