trieste
Grand seafront squares, Viennese-style cafés and a white castle beside the Adriatic.
- Best time
- April–June and September–October are pleasant for walking by the sea. July–August is warm, with locals swimming off the seafront; winter brings the bora, a cold wind that can gust hard enough to knock you off balance.
- How long
- 2 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Venice, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 17–19 hours all in. Trains from Venezia Mestre reach Trieste in about 2 hours. Italy is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

A port city squeezed between the Adriatic and the Slovenian border, built up by the Habsburgs as Vienna's outlet to the sea. Its grand squares, old literary cafés and mix of Italian, Austrian and Slavic food make it feel unlike anywhere else in Italy.

Things to do
- Piazza Unità d'ItaliaA vast square open to the sea on one side, lined with grand Habsburg-era buildings.Map ↗
- Canal GrandeA short canal in the old merchant quarter, lined with cafés and the blue-domed Serbian Orthodox church.Map ↗
- Miramare CastleA white castle on the water, built for an Austrian archduke, with gardens to walk.Map ↗
- San Giusto hillA castle, a cathedral and Roman ruins on the hill above the old town.Map ↗
Good to know
- Miramare is about 8 km up the coast; local buses run there, or walk the seafront from Barcola.
- Halal food is limited, and local meat dishes lean on pork, so seafood, coffee-house cakes and pastries are the easy options.
