the hague

Vermeer, royal streets and a tram ride to a wide North Sea beach.

Best time
May to September works well for mixing museums with the coast, with July and August bringing beach crowds. November to February is cold and windy by the sea, but the museums make a good city break.

Getting there
Fly direct to Amsterdam on KLM (about 13 hours). Trains from Schiphol reach Den Haag Centraal in about 30 minutes. The Netherlands is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

The Hague is the Dutch seat of government, with royal palaces, embassies and art collections around a leafy centre. Scheveningen adds a proper beach, just a tram ride away.

Good to know

  • The Schilderswijk, just south of the centre, is full of Turkish and Moroccan food, with the big Haagse Markt street market next door.
  • Den Haag Centraal and Den Haag HS are different stations, both close to the centre.
