delft
Blue-and-white pottery, a leaning church tower and quiet canals between two big cities.
- Best time
- April to June and September bring pleasant walking weather without the busiest summer weekends. July and August are busier; November to February is chilly and often wet, with short days.
- How long
- 1 day, or a night
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Amsterdam on KLM (about 13 hours). Trains from Schiphol reach Delft in about 35 minutes, and the Markt is a 10-minute walk from the station. The Netherlands is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Delft is small enough to cross on foot, with tree-lined canals, two big churches and a broad market square. Vermeer lived and painted here, and the blue-and-white pottery is still made by hand.

Things to do
- Markt and the Nieuwe KerkThe town hall and the New Church face each other across the square; the Dutch royal family is buried in the church, and you can climb its tower.Map ↗
- Oude KerkThe Old Church, with its noticeably leaning tower, where Vermeer is buried.Map ↗
- Royal DelftThe last of the old potteries, where you can watch the blue-and-white pieces being painted by hand.Map ↗
- Oude DelftThe town's oldest canal, lined with brick houses and little bridges.Map ↗
Good to know
- Museum Prinsenhof Delft, where William of Orange was shot in 1584, is closed for renovation until 2027.
- Delft is small, so halal choice is limited; The Hague, 15 minutes by train, has far more.
Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
