taupo
Lakefront walks, thundering Huka Falls and steaming geothermal ground.
- Best time
- November–April is warmer for swimming and lake trips. June–August is cold, especially in the evenings, but that's perfect hot-pool weather, and the ski fields on Ruapehu are about 1.5 hours away.
- How long
- 2 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Auckland in about 10 hours, then drive about 3.5 hours south. New Zealand is 4 hours ahead of KL, 5 during daylight saving (late September to early April).

Taupo sits on the shore of New Zealand's largest lake, which fills the crater of an ancient supervolcano. Huka Falls, steaming geothermal ground and lake cruises make it an easy stop on a North Island road trip.

Good to know
- Stay on the boardwalks at geothermal sites; the ground can be thin over boiling water.
- A boat cruise is the quickest way to the Mine Bay carvings; kayaking there takes half a day.
- Halal choice in town is limited, so seafood and vegetarian dishes are the easy fallback.
