  1. Day 1

    Arrive and Longshan Temple

    Morning
    Fly from KL to Taoyuan, about 4.5 hours; Taiwan is on the same time as Malaysia. The Airport MRT reaches Taipei Main Station in about 40 minutes.
    Lunch
    Beef noodle soup near the hotel.
    Afternoon
    Check in, then ride the MRT two stops to Longshan Temple, a busy old temple full of incense and worshippers.
    Evening
    Ningxia Night Market, a short ride from Taipei Main Station, small and focused on food.
  2. Day 2

    Palace Museum and Beitou

    Morning
    MRT to Shilin and a short bus to the National Palace Museum, one of the world's largest collections of Chinese imperial art. Allow a few hours.
    Lunch
    Lunch near the museum or back at Shilin.
    Afternoon
    Ride the red line up to Beitou and change for Xinbeitou, the hot spring district at the end of the line. Soak in a public bath or a hotel spa.
    Evening
    Back down the line to Shilin Night Market, the city's biggest, near Jiantan station.
  3. Day 3

    Taipei 101 and Raohe

    Morning
    Go up Taipei 101 for the view over the city.
    Lunch
    Xiaolongbao at Din Tai Fung, which started in Taipei and has a branch at Taipei 101.
    Afternoon
    Rest, then late in the afternoon climb the short, steep Elephant Mountain trail to watch the sun set behind Taipei 101.
    Evening
    Raohe Night Market, a short taxi ride away, smaller and more food-focused than Shilin.
  4. Day 4

    Home

    Morning
    Lu rou fan, braised minced pork over rice, for a late breakfast near the hotel.
    Lunch
    One last bubble tea for the road. There's a tea shop on every street.
    Afternoon
    Airport MRT back to Taoyuan, about 40 minutes, and fly home.

Good to know

  • Get an EasyCard for the MRT, buses and convenience stores.
  • Pork is in a lot of Taiwanese food. Muslim travellers can find halal restaurants around the city, and the Taipei Grand Mosque is near Daan Park.
  • In typhoon season, roughly July to September, keep an eye on the forecast. Flights and tours can be cancelled at short notice.
