St Moritz is a high Alpine resort in the Engadin, a broad valley strung with lakes at about 1,800 metres. Skip the designer shops: the draw is the lakeside paths, the mountain railways and the famously sunny skies.

Things to do

  1. Lake St MoritzAn easy loop around the lake, with the town stacked on the slope above.Map ↗
  2. Bernina lineTrains climb past glaciers and high lakes to Alp Grüm and over the pass to Italy; ordinary red trains run the same track as the Bernina Express.Map ↗
  3. Muottas MuraglAn old funicular up to a terrace looking down the whole chain of Engadin lakes.Map ↗
  4. CorvigliaA funicular and cable cars up to the ski area above town, with walking paths in summer.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Ordinary trains on the Bernina line let you hop off at Morteratsch for the glacier walk or at Alp Grüm for lunch; the Bernina Express mainly adds panoramic windows.
  • Halal meat is hard to find in the Engadin; meat-free pizzoccheri and cheese dishes are the easy fallback.
