A high valley of ski slopes, forest trails and a lake below the mountains.

January–March is ski season, though World Economic Forum week in January fills the hotels and brings security checks. July–September is best for walking; May and November are quiet, with many lifts shut.

Davos is a long valley town at 1,560 metres, more working resort than chalet village, with ski areas on both sides and a lake at its northern end. It grew up as a cure resort for tuberculosis patients, the world of Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain, and the World Economic Forum meets here each January.

Things to do

  2. Lake DavosA flat path around the lake, about an hour on foot.Map ↗
  3. Sertig ValleyA side valley of old farmhouses, pasture and a waterfall, a short bus ride from town.Map ↗
  4. SchatzalpA funicular up to a former sanatorium above town, with an alpine garden in summer and a sledging run in winter.Map ↗
  5. Kirchner MuseumThe Expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner spent his last two decades here, and the museum holds the biggest collection of his work.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Davos Dorf is the stop for Parsenn and the lake; Davos Platz is for Jakobshorn and Schatzalp.
  • Skip World Economic Forum week unless that's why you're going; hotels book out and security closes parts of town.
  • Halal meat is hard to find here, and local soups and dumplings often hide dried meat, so potato and cheese dishes are the easy fallback.
