snowdonia (eryri)

Welsh mountain paths, slate valleys and lakes beneath Yr Wyddfa.

Best time
May–September has long days and the best chance of the mountain railway reaching the top. July–August is busy; November–February is short, wet and often snowy up high, so stick to the valley walks.
How long
3 days
Getting there
Fly direct from KL to London (about 14 hours) on Malaysia Airlines or British Airways, then take the train from Euston to Bangor, about 3 hours 15 minutes, and a bus or taxi to Llanberis, about 30 minutes. The UK is 7 hours behind KL in summer and 8 in winter.

Eryri, also known as Snowdonia, is a national park of mountains, lakes and old slate-quarry villages in north-west Wales. Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is the famous peak, but lakeside and valley walks make a good trip without a summit.

Good to know

  • Pen y Pass car park must be booked ahead in the busy season; the Sherpa'r Wyddfa buses link the main trailheads instead.
  • Early and late in the season, many railway trains stop at Clogwyn, below the summit, and wind can cut any trip short.
  • Halal food is scarce in the villages, so self-catering helps; stock up at the supermarkets in Bangor.
