Salamanca is built of golden sandstone that glows at sunset, around one of Europe's oldest universities. Its Plaza Mayor is one of the finest squares in Spain, and it fills with students and families every evening.

Good to know
- Come back to the Plaza Mayor after dark, when it's lit up and full of people.
- Halal meat is hard to find, and local cooking leans heavily on pork; tortilla, egg and vegetable dishes are the easy fallback.
