safranbolu
Ottoman timber houses, copper workshops and saffron sweets in a steep-sided old town.
- Best time
- April–June and September–October are good for walking the lanes. Summer weekends are busy with Turkish visitors; winter is quiet, with snow and icy cobbles.
- How long
- 2 days, 1 night
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop via Istanbul to Ankara, about 14–16 hours all in, then about 3 hours by road or bus. Turkey is 5 hours behind KL all year.

Safranbolu is one of Turkey's best-preserved Ottoman towns, a valley of timber-framed houses with red-tiled roofs. It's named after the saffron once grown here, and the old bazaar still sells it alongside copperware and lokum.

Things to do
- ÇarşıThe old bazaar quarter, where coppersmiths and blacksmiths still work in some of the lanes.Map ↗
- Kaymakamlar HouseAn Ottoman family mansion kept as it was, with separate rooms for men and women and a revolving cupboard to pass food between them.Map ↗

Good to know
- Stay in a restored Ottoman house in the Çarşı; the newer town up the hill has none of the charm.
- Meat is halal as standard here.
