rotorua
Geysers, steaming pools and Māori culture beside a volcanic lake.
- Best time
- October–April is warm for the lakes and forest. June–August is cold and damp, which is when the hot pools feel best.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct from KL to Auckland (about 11 hours), then it's about 3 hours' drive south. New Zealand is 4 hours ahead of KL, 5 during daylight saving (late September to early April).

Rotorua steams: geysers, bubbling mud and hot pools, with a whiff of sulphur everywhere you go. It's also the best place in New Zealand to learn about Māori culture.

Good to know
- Halal food is limited to a few Indian and kebab places in town. Hāngī dinners can include pork, so ask about the menu when you book.
- Stay on the boardwalks: the crust around the vents is thin and the water is boiling.
