Roman ruins, piazzas and pasta in a city you can explore street by street.

Best time
April–June and September–October are warm and good for walking. July–August is very hot on the exposed ruins, and many Romans leave town in August; November–February is cooler and wetter, but quieter.

Getting there
Fly with one stop, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 16–18 hours all in. The Leonardo Express train from Fiumicino reaches Termini in about 30 minutes. Italy is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Good to know

  • Halal restaurants cluster around Termini station and Piazza Vittorio. Carbonara and amatriciana are made with pork.
  • Shoulders and knees must be covered in St Peter's and other churches.
