Coastal footpaths, a huge shallow lagoon and Creole meals on Mauritius's quieter outer island.

April–June and September–November are warm and pleasant outdoors. July–August is cooler and windy, and January–March is humid and rainy, with cyclone risk.
How long

Getting there
About 7 hours direct from KL to Mauritius on Air Mauritius, then about 1.5 hours on to Rodrigues. Connections don't always line up, so plan a night on Mauritius each way.

Rodrigues is a small island about 560 km east of Mauritius, with hilly farms, fishing villages and a lagoon bigger than the island itself. Days revolve around coastal walks, the market and long meals cooked by your host.

Good to know

  • Halal meat is hard to find, but fish and octopus are the island's staples anyway; agree the cooking with your host.
  • Arrange a pickup for the end of the coast path; buses are infrequent.
