queenstown
Lake Wakatipu, mountain views and winter skiing around a compact lakeside town.
- Best time
- December–April has long days for the lake and walks, with autumn colour in April. July–August is ski season, with snowy peaks and cold, icy roads; spring and late autumn are quieter in between.
- How long
- 4–5 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop: direct to Auckland (about 11 hours), then about 2 hours on to Queenstown. Connections via Sydney or Melbourne work too. Town is 15 minutes from the airport. New Zealand is 4 hours ahead of KL, 5 during daylight saving (late September to early April).

Queenstown sits on Lake Wakatipu with the Remarkables rising straight behind it. It's known for bungy jumps and jet boats, but there's plenty to do at an easy pace too: lake cruises, gondola views and gold-rush Arrowtown.

Things to do
- Bob's PeakThe Skyline gondola climbs to a lookout over town and the lake, with a luge track at the top.Map ↗
- TSS EarnslawA coal-fired steamship from 1912 that still crosses the lake to a high-country sheep station.Map ↗
- ArrowtownA gold-rush town 20 minutes away, with old miners' cottages and golden poplars in autumn.Map ↗
- Coronet Peak and The RemarkablesThe two ski areas closest to town, both with beginner slopes.Map ↗
Good to know
- Halal choice in town is small, mostly Indian and kebab places, so a self-catering apartment makes things easier.
- Leave a spare day: mountain weather cancels flights, gondolas and boat trips.
