paros

Fishing harbours, white village lanes and smooth granite coves around a compact Cycladic island.

Best time
May–June and September are warm, with buses and boats running. July–August is crowded and windy; from November to March buses are few and many places close.
How long
3–4 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop to Athens, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 14–16 hours all in. From there it's a 40-minute flight to Paros, or about 3–5 hours by ferry from Piraeus. Greece is 5 hours behind KL in summer and 6 in winter.

Paros sits in the middle of the Cyclades, with an easy mix of harbour towns, sandy coves and marble-paved villages. Parikia is where the ferries come in, Naoussa is the fishing harbour, and Lefkes up in the hills is the quiet one.

Things to do

  1. ParikiaThe port town, with old lanes and the Panagia Ekatontapiliani, a church said to date back to the 4th century.Map ↗
  2. NaoussaA small harbour of fishing boats and whitewashed tavernas, with a ruined Venetian fort at its mouth.Map ↗
  3. LefkesThe old inland capital, all marble lanes; an old stone path leads down from here towards the east coast.Map ↗
  4. KolymbithresSmooth, wind-carved granite boulders splitting the shore into tiny sandy coves, across the bay from Naoussa.Map ↗
  5. AntiparosThe small island next door, a 10-minute ferry from Pounta, with a big cave and a relaxed village.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Parikia is the easiest base for ferries and buses; Naoussa is livelier in the evening but a bus ride from the port.
  • The car ferry to Antiparos leaves from Pounta on the west coast, not Pounda beach on the east.
  • Halal food is very limited; seafood and salads are the easy choices, but gyros are usually pork.
