Best time
March–May brings flowers and mild days, and the Paro Tshechu festival usually falls in March or April. October–November is clear, with the best mountain views. June–August is the wet monsoon, and December–February has frosty mornings but bright days.

Getting there
There's no regular direct flight from KL to Paro. Drukair runs direct charters on some dates (about 4.5 hours), mostly sold with tour packages; otherwise it's one stop, usually via Bangkok, on Drukair or Bhutan Airlines, which can mean a night in Bangkok. The airport is 15 minutes from town. Bhutan is 2 hours behind KL.

Paro is a small town in a broad farming valley, with a great fortress-monastery above the river and Tiger's Nest clinging to a cliff high above the pines. It's where most Bhutan trips begin and end, and it's worth a few days of its own.

Things to do

Good to know

  • Malaysians need a visa arranged before travel, usually through a tour operator, plus the daily Sustainable Development Fee, and a licensed guide is required for the whole trip, Paro and Thimphu included.
  • Tiger's Nest is best on the second or third day, once you've got used to the altitude.
  • Halal meat isn't usual in Bhutan, but tour operators can arrange it with enough notice, and vegetarian dishes are easy.
