Nuwara Eliya is a cool hill town at nearly 1,900 metres, ringed by tea estates and vegetable farms and dotted with old colonial bungalows. It's the place to swap the coastal heat for a jumper, a tea tasting and an early start for Horton Plains.

Good to know

  • Horton Plains is best right at opening, because cloud often fills the World's End view by mid-morning.
  • Trains run again between Nanu Oya, 15 minutes below town, and Ella, but through trains from Kandy and Colombo weren't running in late 2026, so for now you arrive by road.
  • The town centre has Muslim-run rice-and-curry shops; at a remote tea-estate bungalow, halal meals need asking for in advance.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
