February–June is the best time, as the dry season pulls animals to the waterholes. July–August is hot and dusty, and Blocks 1 and 2, the busiest part of the park, usually close for about a month in September–October while the other blocks stay open.

Getting there
Fly direct from KL to Colombo (about 3.5 hours), then it's about 4.5–5 hours by road to Tissamaharama, the usual safari base, half an hour from the main gate. Sri Lanka is 2.5 hours behind KL.

Yala is Sri Lanka's best-known park, a mix of scrub, rock outcrops and lagoons running down to the southeast coast. It has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, and elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and birds fill the gaps between sightings.

Good to know

  • Nobody can promise a leopard; a driver who keeps his distance and doesn't race other jeeps to a sighting makes a calmer, better safari.
  • Guesthouses in Tissa pack breakfast boxes for dawn safaris. Halal meat is limited around the park, but vegetable rice and curry is everywhere.
