Big surf, stone-paved villages and tall timber houses off Sumatra's west coast.
- Best time
- May to September brings the big Indian Ocean swells that experienced surfers come for. It rains all year, most in November and December; beginners are better off with an instructor picking a gentler spot whatever the month.
- How long
- 4–5 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Medan (about 1 hour 10 minutes from KL) and connect to Gunungsitoli (about 1 hour). The Lagundri and Sorake area is about 3–4 hours south by road. Nias is 1 hour behind KL.

An island off Sumatra's west coast with two big draws: one of Asia's best-known right-hand surf breaks at Lagundri Bay, and hilltop villages of tall wooden houses around stone-paved squares, where young men still leap stone towers. You don't need to surf to make the trip worth it.

- Lagundri BayA long, powerful right-hander that surfers travel across the world for.Map ↗

Good to know
- Lagundri's reef break is not for beginners; take a lesson and let the instructor choose the spot.
- Nias is mostly Christian and pork is central to feasts. The Padang restaurants in Gunungsitoli and Teluk Dalam are halal and the easiest meals.
- Ask before going into village houses or photographing people; these are lived-in homes.
