ambon

Fish with papeda, spice-island history and a bay full of dive possibilities.

Best time
October to March is the drier season and the best time for the beaches and the bay. The rains come from May to August, heaviest in June and July: the reverse of Bali and most of western Indonesia.
How long
3–4 days
Getting there
No direct flight from KL. Connect in Makassar (about 3 hours from KL, then under 2 hours to Ambon) or in Jakarta. Pattimura Airport is about 45 minutes from the city, across the Merah Putih bridge. Ambon is 1 hour ahead of KL.

The capital of Maluku, the original Spice Islands, wrapped round a deep bay. It's a lively, music-loving port city with Dutch-era forts, good beaches nearby and some of Indonesia's best muck diving, right in Ambon Bay.

Good to know

  • June and July are among Ambon's wettest months, so don't plan on Bali's dry-season calendar.
  • The city is roughly half Muslim and half Christian. Halal food is easy to find, especially in the Muslim neighbourhoods and at Padang restaurants, but pork is common elsewhere.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
