Nafplio was modern Greece's first capital, and it still has the handsome squares and neoclassical mansions to show for it. It's a relaxed seaside base for fortress climbs, long dinners and the ancient sites of the Peloponnese.

Good to know

  • Take a taxi up to Palamidi and walk the steps down; it saves the climb in the heat.
  • Halal food is limited; fish, salads and vegetable dishes are easy, but gyros and souvlaki are usually pork.
