mount kinabalu

The big climb: summit at sunrise above the clouds, legs gone for a week.

Best time
The drier months, roughly March to August, give better odds of clear skies. It's cold at the top whatever the month, often close to freezing before dawn. Permits and hut beds are limited, so book months ahead.
How long
2 days, 1 night on the mountain
Getting there
Fly from KL to Kota Kinabalu, about 2.5 hours, then drive about 2 hours to Kinabalu Park headquarters. Most climb packages include transfers from KK.

Malaysia's highest mountain, at 4,095 m, inside Kinabalu Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sabah. The main route needs no climbing gear, but it's a tough two-day hike: up to the mountain huts at Laban Rata on day one, then a pre-dawn push to Low's Peak for sunrise.

Good to know

  • You must climb with a licensed mountain guide and hold a permit, so book through an operator well ahead.
  • Train beforehand with stairs and long hikes, and pack warm layers, gloves, a headlamp and rain gear.
  • Altitude sickness is real. Go slowly, drink water, and turn back if you feel unwell.
