milford sound
Waterfalls, sheer fiord walls and boat trips beneath Mitre Peak.
- Best time
- November–April has long daylight for the drive and the cruise. It rains here more than almost anywhere in New Zealand, all year; June–August brings ice, chains on the road and the odd avalanche closure.
- How long
- 1 full day, with a night in Te Anau
- Getting there
- Fly to Queenstown with one stop, usually via Sydney, Melbourne or Auckland, about 13–16 hours all in. Te Anau is about 2 hours' drive from Queenstown, and Milford Sound about 2 hours beyond that. New Zealand is 4 hours ahead of KL, 5 during daylight saving (late September to early April).

Milford Sound / Piopiotahi is a fiord of sheer rock walls dropping straight into dark water, with Mitre Peak standing over it all. Rain sends hundreds of short-lived waterfalls down the cliffs, so a wet day is often the best day for the boat.

Things to do

Good to know
- The drive takes longer than it looks once you add stops and parking; a coach from Te Anau or Queenstown takes the pressure off.
- A proper rain jacket beats an umbrella; the boats nose right up to the waterfalls.
- Halal food is hard to find out here, so pack supplies in Queenstown.
