lumbini
The Buddha's birthplace, quiet gardens and monasteries built by Buddhist communities worldwide.
- Best time
- February–March and October–November are the comfortable months. December–January can be foggy, April–June is very hot, and July–August brings monsoon rain. Buddha Jayanti, in April or May, draws big crowds of pilgrims.
- How long
- 2 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct from KL to Kathmandu (about 4.5 hours), then it's about 40 minutes on to Bhairahawa and 30–45 minutes by road. Nepal is 2 hours 15 minutes behind KL.

Lumbini, in Nepal's southern plains, is where the Buddha was born. The sacred garden around the birthplace is small and quiet, while monasteries built by Buddhist countries from Thailand to Germany spread across a large planned zone around it.

Good to know
- The monastic zone is several kilometres long, so a bicycle or e-rickshaw saves a lot of walking in the heat.
- Halal options are few, but many pilgrim restaurants serve no meat at all, so vegetarian food is easy.
