lucca
Tree-lined city walls to cycle, an oval piazza and a tower with oak trees on top.
- Best time
- April–June and September–October are good for cycling and walking. July–August is hot; late autumn is wetter, and the Lucca Comics & Games festival packs the town in late October and early November.
- How long
- 1–2 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Pisa, usually via Istanbul or Dubai, about 16–18 hours all in. Trains from Pisa Centrale reach Lucca in about 30 minutes, and Florence is about 1.5 hours away by train. Italy is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Lucca sits inside a ring of Renaissance walls so wide they're now a tree-lined park. Ride a bike round the top, climb the tower with trees on its roof, then wander the lanes and churches inside.

Good to know
- Hire a bike near the gates: the walls are flat, car-free and the easiest way to get your bearings.
- Cars can't enter the old town without a permit, so park outside the walls.
- Halal food is scarce inside the walls; pizza, seafood and the bakery sweets are the easy options.
