lake garda

Lakeside castles, olive groves and mountain-backed towns linked by ferries.

Best time
May–June and September are warm enough for swimming, with full ferry timetables and fewer crowds. July–August is hot and busy, with traffic on the lakeside roads; in winter ferries are few and many hotels close.
How long
3–4 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop to Milan or Venice, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 16–18 hours all in. Fast trains reach Desenzano and Peschiera on the south shore in about an hour from Milan, a little more from Venice; the northern towns are a bus or boat ride on. Italy is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Italy's largest lake is two lakes in one: the wide, flat south, with olive groves and old castles, and the narrow north, walled in by mountains. Sirmione is the easy first taste; Malcesine and Riva are better bases for the hills.

  2. MalcesineA lakeside village of stone lanes below a castle on the rocks.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Desenzano and Peschiera have railway stations; Riva and Malcesine don't, so pick your base before booking trains.
  • The lake is over 50 km long, and the slow ferry from one end to the other takes most of a morning.
  • Halal food is hard to find around the lake; grilled lake fish and pizza are the easy options.
