Le Morne Brabant is a basalt mountain rising straight out of the lagoon in Mauritius's south-west. It's a beach and kitesurfing base, and a UNESCO-listed place of remembrance for the escaped slaves who hid on the mountain.

Good to know

  • Go with a guide for the scramble beyond the cross to the summit; it's exposed rock, nothing like the lower trail.
  • The famous 'underwater waterfall' is an optical illusion seen from the air, by helicopter or seaplane.
  • Halal options here are mostly in the resort hotels; the north of the island has far more choice.
