Lake Tekapo is a small town on a milky-turquoise lake, coloured by fine glacial rock flour, with the Southern Alps behind. Stay a night for the stars: it sits in one of the world's largest dark-sky reserves.

Good to know
- There's little or no halal food here, so stock up in Christchurch; most places to stay have kitchens.
- Bring warm layers even in summer. Nights by the lake get cold.
