lake balaton

Lakeside swimming, Tihany's hilltop village and cycle paths around Hungary's summer playground.

Best time
June and September are best for cycling and the villages, with fewer crowds. July–August is warmest for swimming and busiest; from November to February most beaches and resort businesses close, though Hévíz's warm lake stays open.
How long
3–4 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop to Budapest, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in. Trains from Budapest take about 1.5 hours to Siófok on the south shore and 2 hours to Balatonfüred on the north. Hungary is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Balaton is central Europe's largest lake, long, shallow and warm in summer, and Hungary's favourite holiday spot. The north shore has volcanic hills, vineyards and old villages; the south shore has sandy beaches where you can wade out a long way.

Things to do

  1. TihanyA peninsula with a hilltop Benedictine abbey, a village of thatched houses and lavender fields in early summer.Map ↗
  2. BalatonfüredAn old spa town with a long tree-lined promenade and villas, a good north-shore base.Map ↗
  3. Hévíz and KeszthelyHévíz is a warm thermal lake you can swim in all year; nearby Keszthely has the grand Festetics Palace.Map ↗
  4. Cycling round the lakeA cycle path runs about 200 km round the whole lake; ride a stretch and take the train or a ferry back.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Car ferries cross between Tihany and Szántód, so you can switch shores without going all the way round.
  • Halal meat is hard to find around the lake; bring groceries from Budapest, or stick to lángos, fish and pancakes.
