Eger is a small Baroque town in northern Hungary, famous for a castle that held off an Ottoman army in 1552 and for the red wine called Bull's Blood. The Ottomans took it later, and left behind one of Europe's most northerly minarets.

Things to do
- Eger CastleThe hilltop fortress where Captain Dobó's small garrison held out against the Ottoman siege, with walls, tunnels and views over town.Map ↗
- Dobó SquareThe main square, with a Baroque Minorite church and statues of the siege heroes.Map ↗
- MinaretA slim 17th-century minaret about 40 metres tall; climb its very narrow spiral stair to the top.Map ↗
- Turkish BathA domed bathhouse from the Ottoman era, restored, with modern thermal pools beside it.Map ↗
Good to know
- The minaret stair is tight and dark; skip it if small spaces bother you.
- The railway station is about 20 minutes' walk south of the old centre.
- Halal meat is hard to find in Eger; bring food from Budapest, or stick to fish, cheese and pastries.
