A riverside castle, medieval lanes and a cathedral at the other end of town.

Best time
April–October works well for the old streets and castle park, especially May–June and September. July–August is busier; November–February is cold and dark early, but the castle rooms are indoors.
How long
1–2 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop to Dublin, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 17–19 hours all in. Take the train from Heuston to Kilkenny, about 1.5 hours; the station is a short walk from the centre. Ireland is 7 hours behind KL in summer and 8 in winter.

Kilkenny is a small medieval city with a big castle at one end and a cathedral at the other, joined by a walk known as the Medieval Mile. Craft shops, old lanes and pubs make it worth staying the night.

Good to know

  • The castle park is free to wander; the restored rooms inside need a ticket.
  • Everything is walkable: the castle to St Canice's takes about 15 minutes.
  • Halal choice is very small, so a self-catering flat helps; Dublin has far more.
