k'gari

Freshwater lakes, rainforest on sand and beach tracks on the island once called Fraser.

Best time
April–October is cooler and drier, good for driving and swimming in the lakes, and from July humpbacks gather in Hervey Bay next door. December–March is hot and wet, with storms that can upset tide-dependent plans.
How long
2–3 days
Getting there
Fly direct to Brisbane in about 8 hours. Drive about 3 hours to Rainbow Beach, then take the 10-minute barge from Inskip Point, or join a tour from there or from Hervey Bay. Queensland is 2 hours ahead of KL all year.

K'gari, formerly Fraser Island, is the world's largest sand island, with clear freshwater lakes and rainforest growing straight out of the sand. The beach is the highway, so most first-timers come on a guided 4WD tour that plans the day around the tides.

Good to know

  • Driving yourself needs a high-clearance 4WD, a vehicle permit and a tide chart; ordinary hire cars aren't allowed on the island.
  • Dingoes are wild and can be dangerous: keep children within arm's reach, walk in groups and never feed them.
  • Halal food is scarce on the island, so arrange halal meals with your tour when booking, or bring supplies from Brisbane.
